Introduction

The womens side at The Club has long been established as a premier team in South East London. BWRFC was formed in 1990 at Blackheath, though many of the founding players were originally based at Bromley.

The Club runs two womens teams.  The first team will be playing in the National Challenge South East League this season. The first team has a reputation for not only a good standard of play, but of a great social life alongside it. The section also runs a second team who will be playing friendly fixtures with a variety of locally based teams.  The second XV are proud of their competitive nature, regardless of numbers available and field a mix of experienced semi-retired players and new players working their way up to the first team.

BWRFC is renowned in the area for its excellent social atmosphere and a work hard/play hard ethic has been at the root of the womens section since the offset. Some hair-raising social nights have resulted in suspected liver damage to all involved. The section also likes to share its appetite for destruction with other innocent clubs, with tours taking place in the UK and beyond. 2003 saw the womens sections most ambitious tour yet with a two week trip out to Canada and America culminating in participation in the famous Saranac Lake Tournament.

Blackheath WRFC welcome any new players whether you have never picked up a ball in your life or if you are an experienced player looking to further your playing skills.  Please come down to join us for a few training sessions or get in touch with our social secretary and make a date to ease yourself in with the less physical side of the club.

Pre-Season Training:  Wednesdays & Thursdays 7.30, Greenwich Park
Matches:  Sundays, KO between 12 and 3 depending on time of year.

Annual Dinner

The 2003/2004 season annual dinner took place on June the 18th in the elegant surroundings of Bickley Manor in south east London near Bromley.

The evening began in a elegant style, everyone dressed up to the nines in their suave suits and daring dresses.  Having seated the hungry hordes the decorum was upset almost immediately by a typically competitive round of Heads or Tails, won by the tactical nouse of retired prop Lindsay (aka B).  Special thanks to B are due from all those tables that benefited from her fine haul of wine!

The meal itself was a huge success (with only minimal damage caused to dresses from falling foodstuffs), and was followed by a round of alternately rousing, touching and heartfelt speeches during the awards ceremony.  I think it is safe to say we would all like to thank Mum and Dad for making Marlene, if only we could now persuade her to stay in the country for another season!

Congratulations to all of the worthy winners this year:

Best Newcomer: Marlene Lorenz

Most Improved: Marlene Lorenz

Best 2nd Team Player: Kathryn Hennessy

Best 1st Team Player: H

Doris: Lauren (for repeatedly falling in the river at the 10's in Kings Lynn)

Club Player of the Year: H

Club person of the Year: Clare Elliot

Founders Cup: The 2nd team as a whole

A special mention should also go to our ever present accountant Helen who received the award for Continued Effort from the mens side on the night as she foolishly missed out on their party which was held earlier in the summer.

After numerous toasts and a typically verbose stint on the mic from Elliot, what little decorum we could muster between us was discarded as the cheesy pop began.  The dancing got underway at 10.45 and there was continued competition for floor space through to 1am when the manor staff heartlessly called it a day and headed home to bed.

Luckily for us there were no such thoughts in the mind of Ed who once again donned the role of Tom Cruise and whiled away the wee small hours in her now infamous abode, producing cocktails of limitless strength to a soundtrack of classic karaoke.  Rumor has it is she excelled herself one again as hostess though it is doubtful that anyone really knows!  By 8am the casualty count had spiraled out of control and the festivities drew to a close.  All present have subsequently been verified as alive and well, though Paulas feet may never quite be the same.  If you get a chance Ed, please could you pop round with her shoes

Many thanks from all of the club must go to H for her splendid organisation, and excellent speechmaking under duress.  A great time was had by all.  THANK YOU!
